Crowns Q & A

What is a crown?

A crown is a cap that covers the top of your tooth. The team at Encino Dental Esthetics uses porcelain for their crowns, which is a strong and durable substance similar in color and translucency as natural tooth enamel. This makes your crown look just like a natural tooth when sealed in place.

To make your crown fit perfectly and feel comfortable in your bite, your provider designs and fabricates it using an impression of your mouth. Encino Dental Esthetics takes all of its impressions with an iTero Element® intraoral scanner, which is more accurate, convenient, and technologically advanced than traditional dental molds.

Whether you need to restore a chipped tooth or treat a tooth with extensive decay, a crown can restore your oral health. A crown is also often used to attach to a dental implant.

Why would I need a crown?

By covering the top part of your tooth, crowns can serve several functions. Crowns can be used to:

  • Stabilize a tooth after a large filling
  • Cover an aesthetically compromised tooth
  • Restore a damaged tooth
  • Strengthen a tooth after a root canal
  • Protect a compromised tooth

If you’re getting dental implants, you can also attach a crown to an implant to provide a replacement for a missing tooth.

How do you place my crown?

The Encino Dental Esthetics team can place your crown in two easy office visits. During your first visit, your provider prepares your tooth by removing some enamel. This creates room to fit the crown over your tooth.

After the tooth is prepared, your provider uses the iTero Element intraoral scanner to take an impression. The team sends your impression to a lab that uses it to fabricate your crown, then calls you back to the office when it’s ready.

While the lab is creating your permanent crown, you will wear a temporary restoration. Your dentist seals your permanent restoration in place, and you leave with a beautifully restored smile.

If you’re interested in getting a crown, or simply want to know more about the procedure, schedule a visit with Encino Dental Esthetics today by calling the office or booking online.
